Organic Farming

What is Organic farming?
Growing crops without using any artificial fertilizers or pesticides, relying on a combination of traditional farming knowledge and modern techniques to produce good quality vegetables. Making sure that the soil is sweet and vital, so that we can produce beautiful food for our customers. We are dedicated to supplying the consumer with food which has no hidden additives and is produced without contaminating the environment

What are the benefits of organic food?
Organic food contains no pesticide residues or GM ingredients, tends to be higher in nutrients, and often tastes better. It is the product of an environmentally friendly farming system, and is safe to eat. Pesticides have only been with us for a few decades, and that's nothing in evolutionary terms! But with over 60% of some conventional produce carrying residues of chemicals designed to be toxic, why risk it? Children consume a higher proportion of pesticides to body weight, and are more susceptible to these than adults, but many health conditions including cancer have also been linked to pesticide exposure.

Organic crops grow more slowly, because they aren't artificially fed; they tend to have less water and more dry matter including higher vitamin and mineral content. Get the best value for money by looking at quality in more ways than just skin deep!

Why does it cost more?
Organic food costs reflect the special care taken of the environment, and the expense involved in maintaining a diverse and varied crop range. On our supplier farm, over 50 varieties of vegetables are produced, these are rotated around the farm to avoid disease build-up, but this costs more than if they grew only one thing.

Conventional farmers are struggling because food prices are too low, and taxpayers are supporting this system through our taxes, and the Common Agriculture Policy. Our supplier does not receive any subsidies, and the prices represent a fair return to us.

Check out the Soil Association website for more information of why organic produce is beneficial.
